Bison Trails, a blockchain infrastructure company recently acquired by Coinbase, introduced a new Polkadot API that allows developers to build their applications much faster.
Starting Thursday, Bison Trails customers will be able to take advantage of Polkadot Indexer, a new protocol that allows users to access and query all types of blockchain data much more efficiently.
On a technical level, Polkadot Indexer enables users to pull data to their nodes with significantly fewer requirements. Bison Trails claims that for very active accounts, the indexer can hold up to a thousand queries. In practice, the indexer is an API that users can use to create the equivalent of the on-chain market intelligence platform Glassnode, the DeFi asset management tool Zerion, or the Zapper wallets – but for Polkadot tokens.
The indexer is also available for Kusama, Polkadot's multichain network.
In terms of wider use cases, Polkadot Indexer is marketed to wallets, exchanges, and custodians, as well as data aggregators, blockchain analytics firms, and other developers building applications on Polkadot and Kusama.
"The indexer combines two areas of our core competency: protocol infrastructure and securing blockchain data," said Andrew Henshaw, chief technology officer of Bison Trails. "Polkadot's unique infrastructure enables it to process an exceptionally large number of transactions. As adoption by participants and developers increased, we saw a critical need for better indexing."
Joe Lallouz, CEO of Bison Trails, described data access as "the foundation for participating and building successful blockchain applications". He explained:
"With Polkadot Indexer, teams can uncover critical data and insights faster than ever before while saving engineering time and resources by eliminating the need to build and maintain indexing applications in-house."
Polkadot has what it takes to be an extremely active community. Valued at $ 31.5 billion, the DOT cryptocurrency is the sixth largest by market capitalization. Kusama, Polkadot's so-called "wild cousin", ranks 41st in terms of market capitalization with a total value of 2.3 billion US dollars.
